Big & Little Stony Creek (Giles County)
Special regulations apply to that portion of Little Stony Creek in
the Jefferson National Forest. Most of the special section is below the
Cascades waterfall. The upper reaches of Little Stony Creek contain
native brook trout, but rainbow trout comprise most of the trout
population below the Cascades. Adult rainbows average 7–12 inches in
length. The area is heavily used by hikers and picnickers. The stream is
located near Pembroke and can be reached by Route 623.
Jefferson National Forest
With diverse habitats, the national forests feature some of the
highest populations of wild turkey, white-tail deer, black bear,
squirrel and ruffed grouse in Virginia.
The forests offer excellent opportunities for both bait and fly
fishing. Native brook trout are found in more that 500 miles of streams.
Many streams and most lakes are stocked with rainbow trout. Anglers also
catch bass, bluegill, and channel catfish.
State regulations govern hunting and fishing. Wildlife and fish
populations are managed by the Forest Service in cooperation with the
Virginia Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries. State license and a
National Forest Stamp are required for both hunting and fishing.
Hunting
Giles County contains 92.4 square miles of
Jefferson National Forest perfect for hunting. With an abundance of
whitetail deer, wild turkey, grouse, rabbit, raccoon, coyote black bear
and bobcat, fall is one Giles County's busiest seasons.
Hunters and sportsman come from neighboring states to
enjoy the great hunting and for a chance to simply sit in the woods and
drink in the peaceful beauty.
Excitement, disappointment, and tall tails fill the
local markets and check stations every evening as hunters of every kind
slowly and unwillingly come from the forest and head in to check their
game.
